Nigeria preaches peace, unity on Independence Day

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Abubakar Magaji, has urged Nigerians to make the most of the Independence Day to embrace peace and unity. Confirming Thursday a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 55th Independence celebration, he congratulated the citizens on the milestone and urged citizens to use the occasion to pray for the two ideals.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest country in terms of population (182 million: 2005 estimate) gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960. This year’s celebrations come on the back of the Boko Haram crisis, although, as previously reported, the uniformed forces have recorded strides, and interparty tensions.
