Danai Gurira cast as Tupac Shakur’s mother

The Walking Dead star, Danai Gurira will play Tupac Shakur’s mother in the upcoming biopic All Eyez on Me. Gurira, who plays Michonne on The Walking Dead, will join the film already in production in Atlanta.

Gurira plays a complex woman. A political activist and member of the Black Panthers, Afeni Shakur raised her son to be a voracious reader with a political awareness that informed his development as a street poet. The film covers Tupac’s rise to stardom as a hip-hop artist and actor, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial stint at Death Row Records, where he was steeped in the East Coast/West Coast rap war. It took a long time for this film to make it to the start line.

The film follows Tupac’s life story, from his “rise to stardom”. The prolific artist was killed during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. All Eyez on Me is directed by Benny Boom and produced by James G. Robinson, David Robinson, and LT Hutton.

Demetrius Shipp Jr. will play Tupac himself, with Jamal Woolard stepping in as east coast rapper Biggie Smalls. Woolard also played Biggie in the 2009 film Notorious. The film is set to be released in 2016.
