6 tips to improve employee satisfaction

Thumbs-up positionEmployees choose to leave their companies for various reasons, compensation and progression concerns being at the top of the employee satisfaction list.

However, there are plenty of underlying issues that affect employee satisfaction. Lack of appropriate pay is not the only factor forcing employees to quit their jobs. Businesses need to understand that sometimes the smallest factors can have a disproportionate impact on how employees feel about the place they work. Makamba Online takes a look at six of these factors that should be considered regardless of whether you have one or one hundred employees.

1. Respect them

It goes without saying that employees must feel respected by their managers and colleagues. A lack of respect in the workplace is a poison for which there is no antidote.

2. Encourage personality

For the most part, the days where a brand had a single tone of voice are long gone. Parameters and guidelines are better than scripts, both for your customers and your staff. I think it makes sense to allow staff to communicate like humans via your service / content / social channels. Your customers will love you for it. Robots suck.

3. Training/ skills development

The development of skills is good for business and good for morale, if done in the right way. The more cynical employees may say that you’re only doing this to make more money, but good managers are big believers in career development, and making bright staff even brighter.

4. Give recognition for greater employee satisfaction

If an employee has done something remarkable then be sure to thank them (in person, via company emails, in all-staff meetings). Credit where credit’s due. Be warned! Managers that steal the credit will cause ill feeling while undermining themselves. That never ends well.

5. Health and safety precautions

When it comes to the health and safety of their employees, every company must try to adopt various safety measures. These measures could involve investing in fire alarms, maintaining electrical equipment, investing in furniture that helps to increase safety, for example, an adjustable height workbench for warehouses, amongst others. Companies could also consider involving their employees in the creation of safety policies and decisions about the various safety measures that they need to adopt.

6. Human factors

In a good ergonomic workplace, employees can enjoy both their work and the office environment. This leads to more motivation amongst employees, thus leading to better productivity. For example, if a company invests in a height adjustable desk for each member of staff, the employees will be more comfortable and, thus, more focused on their tasks. This also leads to happier employees and, ultimately, increases employee satisfaction. Hence, it is very important to make a workspace ergonomically-friendly, not only for better productivity, but for employee retention as well.
