It’s not easy to be a great leader, but there are some simple things everyone can do to be a better leader that do not require a great deal of skill or training.
Being a great leader can be difficult. Being a better leader is easy. Try these five simple things and watch your leadership improve.
- Say thanks
Politeness costs nothing, but the return can be invaluable. We all want to feel appreciated, and just a ‘thank you’ can make a world of difference to people.
- Take time to listen
Listening to people is one of the easiest ways to show them respect and build trust in the team and also yourself as a leader. If you can go the extra mile and ask a couple of questions, that will increase the impact, and you just might hear something beneficial.
- Be positive
When we lack positivity and we start to see something fail, we just shrug and think, ‘I knew that would happen.’ Whereas when we have a positive view of an outcome, we will look to step in and change things to turn them around. Positivity isn’t a guarantee of success, but what is certain is that if the leader lacks positivity, so will the team.
- Be yourself
Just be yourself, and try to be yourself consistently. Nothing should be easier than being yourself. Some people lack confidence and try to put on an image of what they feel a leader is. If you are always yourself, you never have to remember whom you were pretending to be.
- Do what you say you will do
Lastly, and probably most important, if you make a commitment, then meet that commitment. Nothing builds trust in teams quicker than that, and trust is the cornerstone of great leadership. If you follow these five simple suggestions, it will improve your leadership, create stronger relationships with your teams, and help you achieve better results.
