Afro-Pop and Jazz fans can look forward to an unforgettable evening as triple SAMA Award winning duo, Mafikizolo, headline The Ekurhuleni Comes Alive Jazz Evening on 13 October at The Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre.
Having just released their seventh album, “Six Mabone”, after a two-year break from the industry, Mafikizolo have centred their new album on their story – dating back to the ‘60s. Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza, will be bringing new sounds to the stage; including elements of blues, and swing.
Supporting South Africa’s favourite duo are The Afro Tenors, an R&B and soul group that has been performing for two-decades. Agos Moahi, Given Mabena and Lucky Sibandan formed the operatic group after studying at the Opera Department of the Pretoria Technikon. Since then, their performances of classical singles and African songs have provided them with plenty of standing ovations.
New to the music scene and opening for the star-studded line-up of groups is Sebe Spring, a soulful singer who writes her own songs on social and political change in her home language – Zulu. Sebe’s musical influence stems from African beats and vocals; however, her style is broad and she has performed at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz and in various other events at the Soweto Theatre.
As per usual an evening of jazz at Birchwood would not be complete without the antics of local comedians. This month, three-time Annual Comics Choice “Comic of the Year Nominee” and SABC 3’s Selimathunzi regular, Chris Mapane, together with fellow comedian Salesman, guarantee to have guests rolling in the aisles.
In partnership with The City of Ekurhuleni, The Sowetan, Mail & Guardian, SAfm Radio, and most recently, The Star and Rust en Vrede Wine Estate, resident MC Hector Motivator will lead the evening’s activities with his own brand of comedy.
Enjoy a delicious three-course meal, Rust en Vrede Estate’s classical wine range and a fun-filled evening on Friday, 13 October at The Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre. Tickets are R450 per person and R4 500 for a table of 10. Starting at 8pm, book a table of 10 now, before corporate companies book their year-end function tables.
