Amaasi: A South African traditional Dish

Umvubo is a traditional South African meal ideal to eat on a warm day. The meal consists of Amasi aka Maas –  Fermented milk that tastes like cottage cheese or plain yogurt, traditionally prepared by storing unpasteurised cow’s milk in a calabash container, and pap. Read the below recipe to make your own version of this popular traditional dish.

What you will need:

70 ml water

Pinch of salt

250 ml Mealie- meal

Maas

Method:

1. Place water and salt in a saucepan and boil.
2. Add meali-meal and stir with a fork until crumbly.
3. Cook (low heat) for 20 minutes constantly stirring to prevent it from burning.
4. Remove from the heat when tender.
TIP: Cool it before adding maas.
