Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NCC Deputy Director of ConsumerAffairs, Dr Yemi Ayetubi, Danbatta, said the appeal followed the rampant destruction of such infrastructure, mostly by youth.

“The commission is requesting partnership with the public, is inprotecting telecom infrastructure,” said Ayetubi.“

The vandalization of telecommunications structures, which including lockout of base stations, stealing of generators and diesel from base stationsand some of these crimes is affecting the quality of services,” said the NCC executive.

Ayetubi appealed to community leaders to make people aware of the negativeimpact of vandalism.

“These vices are hampering smooth operations of the service providers,” hesaid.Vandalism is said to be restricting many telecoms operators from fully implementing outlined network expansion initiatives across the country.

It is reported up to 3 percent of Nigeria’s telecoms sites have beenaffected by arbitrary shutdown and vandalism at any given point in time. The vandalism has also been blamed on the Boko Haram terror group.
